 Cell Phone Insurance
Lost or stolen cell or mobile phone? Remember most
leading insurers do not provide cover on a stand-alone basis

Why consider cover for your Mobile Phone?

Cell phones have become an integral part of our busy lives today – from business to personal use. Imagine the status of your social life when you won't be able to update a FaceBook page, send a 'WhatsApp, SMS, Missed call or Please call me' message – to name a few.

Considering how much money you have spent on it, losing your cell phone can be costly and very inconvenient. Because of this fact, it is worthwhile insuring this valuable possession. Insurance covers the policyholder for his/her mobile phone for accidental loss, damage, or theft - where it can then be replaced with a new (or similar) model, if not the same one. Alternatively, you may be compensated with a cash amount equivalent to its replacement value (depending on your type of cover).

However, please note that most of RSA’s leading insurance companies will not provide cover for cell phones on a stand-alone basis – that is, without the inclusion of your supported business for items such as home content, vehicles, or all risks items as well.

Depending on the insurance company, different policies offer different benefits and exclusions. It’s therefore important to ask all the relevant questions to a specialised Broker, before deciding on the type of insurance cover that best suite your specific needs.

DIB Solutions (Pty) Ltd have partnered with reputable underwriters and insurance companies in order to assist our clients with appropriate Insurance cover – we can therefore also assist clients with tailor-made products (where applicable) at competitive premiums.  Adding your cell (or smart) phone to your specified list of insured items, can be a smart investment.

Cell phone stolen or lost - You don't have posession of it anymore?

  • The claim normally has to be preceded by blacklisting the phone with the relevant service provider.
  • An ITC number will be issued to you to prove that it has been blacklisted, which you then need to provide to your insurance company as part of the claim.
  • You may also need to report this to the Police and they will then issue you with a case number.
  • Service providers and insurance providers may differ in their requirements for blacklisting a lost or stolen cell phone. It is therefore important that you contact them before starting the process.

Also note some of the important questions and considerations for insuring your Cell / Smart Phone:

  • Are only new cell (or smart) phones insured, or are older cell phone models also accepted?
  • Do certain conditions have to be met to warrant a claim? For example, will I be covered if my cell phone was stolen from the front seat of my car, or must it have been locked away in the boot?
  • Are there any waiting periods that apply before my cell phone is fully covered?
  • How long do I have to reach out to my Insurer to make a claim?
  • Is a loan device offered as a benefit and service?
  • Specialist cover in this area may also include cover for sim cards, modems, laptops, tablets and other similar devices. Speak to your Broker.
