mind at ease with proper cover for your planned adventures

Why Off-Road or 4x4 Insurance:

An off-road, 4x4 or SUV vehicle is built for pleasure – that is cross-country drives in the Karoo, off-road in the national parks and Southern Africa's beautiful terrains. However, like any other motor vehicle, you will need some sort of insurance – and that's where 4x4 insurance comes in.

When you decide to take your 4x4 vehicle where it was actually designed to go, make sure you get the off-road or 4x4 insurance that can cover eventualities on the trip. We know that Africa is not a place for the faint-hearted, so you need to put your mind at ease with proper cover.

Off-road vehicles are known for their adventurous journeys, which makes them vulnerable to a host of different risks that normal car insurance doesn’t cater for. One of the biggest risks with respect to off-road adventure, is the overturning of a 4x4 vehicle. That’s why you will need to look at comprehensive Off-road or 4x4 Vehicle Insurance to specifically cover you.

What a standard 4x4 policy should cover:

  • When you cross South African borders - extended territorial cover (take note of the countries listed);
  • Unforeseen events;
  • Accidental damage; and
  • Bringing your car back into South Africa.
However, note that most specialist 4x4 insurance cover differs in the Terms & Conditions - make sure you understand it!

What do 4x4 drivers typically get exposed to:
  • Political instability or unrest in a country;
  • Theft or attempted theft of vehicle or accessories;
  • Attacks from wild life; and
  • Inappropriate road surfaces or non-existent roads.

Some insurers offer additional options such as covers for vehicles' trailers, motorcycles, caravans and even watercraft used for private and leisure purposes.

Also note some of the important considerations when looking for Off-road, SUV or 4x4 Insurance:

  • Check: Mechanical and electrical breakdown specifications;
  • Check your full off-road use as per the vehicle manufacturer's specifications when used off-road and on 4x4 tracks;
  • Emergency Assistance: Most products would provide some emergency assistance to policy holders. Again serious 4x4 off roaders should consider the benefits offered, especially when outside the boarders of South Africa. For example what would happen if medical repatriation may be required;
  • Excess: Consider the excesses applicable to the various products;
  • Liability Cover: Check the liability cover offered through the various products and/or the option to increase your Third Party Liability Cover;
  • Other Benefits: Some products allows for other benefits such as accommodation and one way flight back to South Africa if the vehicle needs to be repatriated to RSA. Mortal remains repatriation is also covered by some;
  • Territorial Limits: Always check your territorial limits of your 4x4 insurance product. Some insurers limit the territorial limits to certain neighbouring countries. The specialist 4x4 products provide more extensive territorial areas;
  • Make sure that your insurer will cover the expenses to recover your 4x4 vehicle back to RSA if involved in an accident outside South Africa.
  • Winching Equipment: Also ensure that your insurance cover makes provision for winching equipment which you'll need in the event of sudden and unforeseen mechanical and electrical breakdown, failure or breakage of the winching equipment of the vehicle.
