A caravan and outdoor camping, is a lifestyle for most serious nature enthusiasts.

If you are a serious 4 x 4 off-roader and consider taking your off-road caravan into Africa, then you may want to consider a more specialist type of product, as well as more cover options.

The basic risks normally covered under Caravan Insurance, are the following:

•   Theft;
•   Fire;
•   Explosion;
•   Accidental damage;
•   Storm, hail, flood or snow;
•   Liabilities caused to other parties.

Normal Caravan Insurance is only for private and/or domestic purposes, where business use will be excluded. Most leading insurers in South Africa would offer caravan insurance for owners. However, consider all your insurance needs carefully.

Also note some of the important considerations when looking for Caravan Insurance:

  • Bonus / No Claims: Ask your Broker about any bonus offers insurers may have for drivers with no past claims. Claim bonus is usually assessed on an annual basis – so if you have no claims for a year, the monthly premium may go down;
  • Caravan Insurance Cover: Some insurers may insure your caravan as part of your exisiting Household Contents and Motor Insurance, or on a Stand-alone basis (where the risk profile is oviously different);
  • Determine your coverage: Read the entire policy before you sign up. If there are types of coverage you don’t feel are necessary, you may be able to opt out of them. Tents, canopies and add-on rooms usually form part of the value of your insurance, but appliances, bedding, tables, chairs and the like don’t. While it’s recommended to insure these items, choosing cover for just the main body and chassis components will reduce your premiums significantly;
  • Excess: Increasing the amount of voluntary excess, is one of the easiest and best ways to obtain cheaper caravan insurance. If you can afford to put down a larger excess, it will greatly reduce the monthly premium;
  • Join a Club: Belonging to a caravanning club might make you eligible for cheaper insurance. The Federation of Caravan and Camping Clubs in South Africa recently arranged special schemes for club members. These schemes have no excesses and the premiums are lower than usual.
  • Territorial Limits: If you are going outside of the RSA borders, check if your insurer cover the areas you are visiting, eg: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and/or Zimbabwe;
  • Safety Features: Adding a few inexpensive safety accessories, can lower your insurance premium. Consider installing an alarm, hitch lock or wheel clamps (or all three). If a caravan has flimsy inside locks or doesn’t lock properly, you can fit a slide bolt with padlock to bring it up to standard;
  • Towing: Ensure you take note of the towing requirements and/or conditions.
